University Street Ministry serves over 7,000 meals each year to homeless youth at Teen Feed. We also help them find housing and jobs through Service Links for Youth. In fact, last year 17 young people left street life behind with help from our case manager. But the need is larger than our small non-profit. Won't you join the fight to help these young people?

Street life is not fun
Youth who land on the streets are likely to be victims of violence, theft, and pedophiles. More than a third of the girls under 14 who left home were raped within their first 6 weeks on the street. (U of Wa, Ana Mari Cauce 1997) Locally, shelters are not the answer in keeping these young ones safe at night. According to recent estimates, there are over 500 youth with no place to stay in Seattle, with only 80-100 shelter slots open on any given night.

Youth have not simply “ran away from good homes.”
More than 65% of the street youth and their parents studied over two years did not have a safe, intact, family home to return to. (U of Wa, Ana Mari Cauce 1997)

Employment may not be the right answer
While many youth who panhandle often hear “just get a job,” the reality is many of them are not in the position to do so. They may be too young, have no address or contact info to provide for the job application, or have mental health complications. In fact, one study found that two-third of the youth have some form of mental health issues, many exacerbated by street life and the trauma of homelessness. (Yvette Lohr, YouthCare 1996)

Why University Street Ministry is important
Not only were we the first U-District non-profit to pledge it’s time to these youth in 1986, we continue to be one of the first places youth come when they are new to street life here in the U-District. Our Teen Feed program offers a nutritious meal and the support of trained volunteers. Our hope is to help them feel safe, accepted, and to help them access other local services, including our case management program, Service Links for Youth. By helping these youth connect beyond basic services, we can be the bridge off the streets.
